After I was saved I began reading the Bible through from Genesis to Revelation, then I would get different translation and read that Bible again. I have real several translations and now just use two. This is not a recommendation for what translation you should read, that is a personal choice. However, as I read each translation I noticed similarities in what Jesus was doing and saying and they began to seep into my mind and I began to ask questions.
I noticed Jesus spent time in prayer (Mark 1:35) is one scripture which features Jesus praying away from His disciples and them looking for Him or when He fed the 5,000 (Matt 14: 16–20, or the 4,000, Matt 15:32) Jesus blessed the food, which meant He prayed for the food to multiply to feed those in attendance.
I noticed that the Lord’s Prayer (Matt 6:9–15) is a conversation with God, which means that is how I should pray. Ask for my daily bread of His will done on earth as it is in Heaven. That is a mouthful and a huge order for sinful man. But, if I want to do the things that Jesus did, I am going to have to live like Jesus did. And because I am not perfect, I will slip up, I can always ask for forgiveness and ask God to recalibrate be back to the way He created me to be and try again.
Our God is a God of unlimited second chances.
The important thing to remember in prayer is to pray for what He created us to do. I cannot pray for a million dollars and expect to get it especially if I was given a million dollars at one time would not be good for me. If you are honest with yourself, you know what you should have and what you shouldn’t. God is not a slot machine, even if you do say, “In Jesus’ name” at the end of your prayer. He will only answer prayers that are inline with what He wants for you.
Praying Psalm 91 over yourself and others is a good idea because He will keep His word if you live up to the first two verses of that prayer. However, we can want the first two verses to be true in our lives and still pray that prayer before it is a reality and it still will work. And as we pray, or relationship with Him will grow and the first two verses do become a reality.
Ask God how He wants you to pray. He will answer you.
