WHY WAS JESUS MISUNDERSTOOD?

Jesus came to bring peace and love to the nation of Israel, yet they expected a general who would raise an army and overthrow the Roman oppressor’s. So, what went wrong? (Isaiah 9:5–7).

To read this scripture we can get the idea that a warrior will be sent if only verse five is believed without verses six and seven. It is possible the Pharisee’s took it out of context or told a half-truth to influence the people., human’s do that all the time. Here, the Pharisees and the Sadducees were the spiritual leaders of the Israelites and their words were law. They said that the Messiah would be a general who would throw the Roman Empire out of Israel. That is what they were looking for. That is what the people were looking for. That is what the disciples were looking for, until they met Jesus.

Jesus was “commissioned” when John the Baptizer baptized Him in the Jordan River and afterward went into the wilderness to be tested by the devil for forty days (Matt 3:3–4:11). The people loved Him because he was healing the sick,  (Matt 8:1–3, 5:13) casting out demons, (Matt 8:28–34 and Mark 5:1–17), and raising the dead (Luke 7:11–17). But, when He began exercising His authority that was when the Pharisee’s began seeking a way to kill Him (Mark 3:1–6, Luke 19:47–48, John 12:47–48).

Possibly one of the final straws for the Pharisees was when Jesus was healing on the Sabbath ( Matt 12:10–14; Luke 14:3:1–6) because the law (Torah) said that it was unlawful to do any work on the Sabbath. (Exodus 31:14–15 and 35:2; Leviticus 22:3) and the punishment for breaking Sabbath rules was death. Then, the final straw with his disciples was when He spoke to them about eating His flesh and drinking His blood, which is found in Chapter 6 of the Book of John, the entire chapter is devoted to who Jesus is and as He revealed that the response of the people and disciples was to leave Him.

Jesus came as our Sacrificial Lamb. The people of Israel up to this time were not able to follow the laws set down in the Torah and were seeking other gods to follow that were more lenient in the rules and behaviors than what God was asking the Jews to follow, so Jesus was sent to die as a sacrifice for our sins so that from His death on we only need to confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, then we are saved . (Romans 10:9) So, when He spoke of eating His flesh and drinking His blood He was speaking about after His death and resurrection we would be commemorating that event through the act of Holy Communion.
